Using a Removal Company
The Professionals
If you’re not able, or willing, to do the tough stuff involved in moving house yourself, a reliable removal company can be worth its weight in gold. From an expert eye in reckoning up the number of boxes you’ll need to unloading your goods at the other end and removing unwanted packaging materials, you can’t beat a reputable removal company for taking the stress out of your move.
How To Choose
The removals market is highly competitive, and you’ll find plenty of firms to choose from – so how do you know which one is right for you? Follow our top tips below to get your move underway:
- Write it down
Simple though it sounds, be organized when listing which companies have given which quotes, and keep all the paperwork together.
- Reputation is key
Slick marketing and low prices do not necessarily equate to a quality service! Try asking around to find out which local companies your friends and neighbours have found to be reliable in the past and start your search with these companies.
- Shop around
Don’t just go with the first company you go with – check out a few different firms to find out exactly how much they charge for which services.
- Get home-based quotes
The internet and telephone are a great starting point for contacting companies, but insist that a representative of the removal firm comes to look at exactly what you’ll be taking and gives a quote based on your possessions. Don’t hide what’s in the loft or cellar, as this may cause the price to rocket on the day! Be sure not to consider any firm who will only quote online or over the phone as they often sub-contract work out to cheaper firms.
- Check the small print
Read any contract carefully before signing, and ask questions if you’re unclear as to what is included in the cost. Check to see whether the price is based on an hourly rate, or if it’s an estimate of the total cost for the job. Try to negotiate a maximum cost for your house move – delays on the day may be inevitable, but you don’t want to end up paying an unlimited amount!
- Establish a contact
Ideally, simplify your communications by going with a firm who can provide you with one key contact who can see your move through from start to finish.
- Make an inventory
Many removal companies will provide you with an inventory of your belongings, but make sure nothing is forgotten by filming or taking pictures of what’s going into that removal van before it’s packed! Keep this with you on the day so that you can keep track of what’s where.
- Check insurance and payment terms
It’s standard practice for companies to ask for a deposit before the removal day, but be wary of firms which only accept cash. Find out who is responsible for any losses or breakages and how these will be compensated.
Ask Again
One final rule is don’t be afraid to ask for clarification of any aspects of the removal company’s procedures at any stage of the move – after all, you’re paying for them to do a professional job!
